The IIGP 2.0 University Challenge 2018 received commendable participation from students across India with over 700 applications for breakthrough science & technology innovations spanning industrial and social sectors. Given the exceptional turnout of applications this year, the top 40 teams (20: social, 20: industrial) – instead of 30, have been shortlisted and will advance to the Ideation Phase of the University Challenge.
The 20 social sector teams have been shortlisted for innovations in the key sectors of agriculture, healthcare and water, and the 20 industrial sector teams represent innovations in environment tech, environment-friendly housing, unmanned aerial/underwater vehicles, energy tech, space debris management, virtual/augmented reality etc.
With the University Challenge, the IIGP 2.0 aims to build a robust technology and innovation ecosystem in India, starting at the university level by fostering and supporting student entrepreneurs and innovators from the length and breadth of the country. It is extremely encouraging to see that the 40 shortlisted teams this year represent leading universities from Tier I cities of Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta and Chennai but also Tier II and Tier III cities of Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Wardha, Pondicherry, Vanasthali, Dehradun, Srinagar, Belgaum, Sambalpur, Jalandhar, Allahabad, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Patiala and Kharagpur.
The top 40 teams were shortlisted through a highly competitive evaluation process based on predefined parameters including technical/conceptual design that considered the advancement in state of the art for the selected technology and risk involved, the need for the innovation, design/build/cost estimates, team dynamics, market assessment and creativity.
The teams now receive an opportunity to pitch their innovations to an expert jury panel at the 2-days University Challenge Downselect Competition at IIT Bombay, 29-30 June 2018. Based on their performance, the winners of IIGP 2.0 University Challenge 2018 will be selected.
